Q. What does the Treeways Initiative mean to our agency?
A. This initiative remains an opportunity to:
- Use regionally native plants where practicable.
- Welcome volunteers to safely plant donated trees.
- Beautify roadsides as a legacy where appropriate.
- Increase public support through partnerships.
Q. How does the Initiative relate to existing mandates?
A. It is supportive of the 1965 Beautification Act.
Q. Will the FHWA assist States in implementing the Initiative?
A. In 1999 the FHWA will offer a handbook, "Roadside Use of Native Plants." This handbook lists trees that are native in your State. The handbook also notes relevant resources. The FHWA is interested in research proposals relevant to this Initiative, i.e. native tree establishment issues, etc.
Q. In 1994 the FHWA surveyed State Highway Agencies to determine the level of participation in this Initiative. What was learned?
A. A brief analysis revealed reasons for not participating and needs to strengthen the Treeways Initiative. The key reason for not participating was lack of funding and consequently lack of administrative and maintenance staff. The most important need noted was that of increased funding for maintenance.
